About North Star Policy Action
North Star Policy Action (NSPA) is an independent research and communications institute working to improve the lives of everyday Minnesotans. We develop and amplify bold, data-driven policy ideas that challenge the status quo and uplift people especially those left behind by current systems. Our work is deeply rooted in equity, and we believe that everyone, no matter who they are or where they live, deserves to thrive.

We’re a small but mighty team that values curiosity, creativity, and the ability to make complex policy issues relatable and relevant. We collaborate with partners across movements, sectors, and communities to drive real change—and we’re looking for a new teammate who can help us communicate that change effectively and authentically.

About the Role
We’re hiring a Communications Director to design and lead a communications strategy that increases NSPA’s visibility and shapes public understanding of the issues we research. This role is ideal for someone who knows how to make an impact with words and visuals, enjoys building meaningful relationships, and is excited about shifting narratives to make policy more people-centered.

This is not a plug-and-play role. You’ll be building a communications program from the ground up—yes, that means structure, strategy, and storytelling. You’ll have wide creative latitude and direct access to organizational leadership. And because we’re a small team, your voice will matter here.

Location: Remote with regular in-person meetings in the Twin Cities Metro
Salary: $100,000–$115,000, commensurate with experience | Full benefits including health and retirement

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and lead an integrated communications plan to build NSPA’s brand, increase our reach, and shape public discourse.
  • Write and edit a wide range of content: website updates, press releases, social media posts, op-eds, talking points, and policy briefs.
  • Manage our digital presence -including website and social media- and ensure messaging is clear, compelling, and aligned across platforms.
  • Build and maintain relationships with reporters, editors, and media outlets. Pitch stories, manage media requests, and coordinate interviews.
  • Plan and execute earned media events and editorial board visits.
  • Track engagement metrics and adjust strategy based on what’s working and what’s not.

Who You Are
We’re looking for someone who brings a mix of communications expertise, cultural fluency, and strategic instincts. If you’re energized by the idea of helping everyday Minnesotans see themselves in public policy conversations and want to bring a social justice lens to every message you’ll thrive here.

Must-Have Qualifications

  • At least 5 years of experience in communications within nonprofit, advocacy, political, labor, or movement settings.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Policy, or related field or equivalent combination of education and lived/professional experience.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills, including the ability to make complex topics accessible and compelling.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead communications strategies from idea to execution.
  • Comfort managing multiple projects, meeting deadlines, and working independently.
  • Familiarity with digital tools (e.g., CMS platforms, social scheduling tools, analytics dashboards).
  • An understanding of Minnesota politics or experience supporting advocacy or campaigns is efforts helpful, but not required.
  • Multilingual skills are helpful in this role, especially for engaging with diverse communities, though not required.

What We Offer

  • A collaborative, mission-driven culture that values equity, honesty, and humor.
  • The chance to build a program from scratch and leave your creative fingerprint.
  • Flexibility: this position is remote, with 1–2 monthly in-person meetings in the Twin Cities. Occasional travel may be required.
  • Opportunities for professional development and strategic leadership.
  • A competitive salary ($100,000–$115,000), full health benefits, retirement plan, and generous time off.
